What Is the UGC CARE List?

The UGC CARE (Consortium for Academic and Research Ethics) List is a registry of quality journals maintained by the University Grants Commission of India. It was established to help Indian researchers, faculty members, and PhD scholars identify authentic, peer-reviewed journals for publication — and to avoid predatory or fake journals.

Publications in UGC CARE-listed or UGC-recognized journals are mandatorily required for:

API (Academic Performance Indicator) scores for faculty
PhD thesis submission requirements
Promotions under CAS (Career Advancement Scheme)

Research grants and fellowship applications
NAAC accreditation and institutional rankings
Recognition by Indian universities and colleges

Important Note: SPJ Publication journals are published following all ethical and technical criteria recommended by UGC for peer-reviewed open access journals. We strongly recommend researchers verify the current UGC CARE list at ugccare.unipune.ac.in for the latest approved journals.

How to Verify a Journal on the UGC CARE List

The UGC CARE list is maintained online by the University of Pune on behalf of UGC. Here is how to check if a journal is approved:

1 Visit UGC CARE Portal

Go to ugccare.unipune.ac.in — the official UGC CARE database maintained by Savitribai Phule Pune University.

2 Search by ISSN or Title

Enter the journal's ISSN number or title in the search box to check its current UGC CARE status.

3 Confirm Group & Status

UGC journals are classified into Group I (also in Scopus/WoS) and Group II. Both groups carry API credit for Indian academics.

FAQs on UGC Approved Journals

UGC's 2022 regulations require PhD scholars to publish at least one research paper in a UGC CARE-listed or peer-reviewed journal before thesis submission. Most Indian universities follow this mandate.

Under UGC's Academic Performance Indicator (API) system, publishing in a UGC CARE Group II journal earns approximately 10 API points, while a Group I journal (also Scopus/WoS indexed) earns 15–20 points per publication.
